The COVID-19 pandemic continues to throw the future of entertainment into whack. As the second season of the anthology series refers to the first, and also features some of the same cast members, it's easy to assume that a third season would continue both traditions. Flanagan and Macy are currently gearing up for the premiere of their new series, Midnight Mass, which premieres on Netflix on September 24.
Season 3 would likely be connected to both Hill House and Bly Manor.
The most recent installment takes Henry James's The Turn of the Screw and leads us into the world of Dani Clayton (Victoria Pedretti), a governess tasked with caring for the Wingraves—two orphaned children with closely guarded secrets. Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it. Netflix initially renewed The Haunting of Hill House as an anthology series with a repertory cast like American Horror Story, per Variety, and signed a multiyear deal with creators Mike Flanagan and executive producer Trevor Macy. That makes it seem like the streaming service initially intended for the show to last several seasons, but take that with a grain of salt. While the first two seasons of The Haunting of… have proven wildly popular, there season 3 is not certain.
It seems that those hoping for a return for a Haunting Season 3 will just have to keep waiting. Midnight Mass is related to another one of Flanagan's works. In Hush, Flanagan's 2016 movie, a masked killer stalks author Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) in her remote home. Young is the author of a book called—you guessed it—Midnight Mass.
Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the title alone will have the hairs on the back of the necks of horror fans everywhere standing up. For decades, horror fans have been fascinated by the lore of controversial writer HP Lovecraft, and there have been various attempts to bring his work to the screen over the years, with varying degrees of success. As the show’s presence ascended, it would attract many A-list celebrities to take part, but some fans would complain that they forgot to keep it scary and credible. However, there are still some scares to be found in the early seasons before it descends into camp and cliche. Originally the show would air on UK TV on Channel 4, before achieving worldwide recognition when Netflix would step in and take control of the property.
"It would have to be with the right piece of IP [intellectual property], it would have to be with the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to really fit with Bly and Hill House." Mike Flanagan, the creator of The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Haunting of Bly Manor, has revealed what would make him return to create a third season. If Netflix does give The Haunting Season 3 the green light, you can probably bet that its episodes will focus on a new creepy mystery and the damaged characters tangled up in it. The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor are both streaming on Netflix, as is Midnight Mass.
The streaming platform has yet to officially renew the series, but here's everything we know so far of a potential third season. "The Haunting series is very much about haunted spaces and haunted people," said creator Mike Flanagan. Plus, Flanagan’s next project, a retelling of the famous Edgar Allen Poe story The Fall of the House of Usher, is already lined up to follow. The cast of Bly Manor and Hill House don't play favorites between the shows.
That means the streamer is certainly open to more seasons—or other projects from the duo behind the show. The Terror is a historical period horror series that uses some real events in the backbone of the narrative, which just like Them changes the timeline of the show from season to season. The second run of episodes switches from icy haunted wastelands to America in WWII, using the Pacific Invasion as the backdrop for the show. The premise revolves around Japanese folklore, while the third season sees the action switch to a psychiatric hospital and one man’s battle with demonic forces. Mike Flanagan has hammered the final nail in The Haunting‘s coffin. According to a recent post on his Tumblr, there will be no third season of acclaimed horror anthology series.
First came The Haunting of Hill House, Mike Flanagan's radical re-envisioning of Shirley Jackson's book of the same name. The Haunting of Bly Manor, out October 9, works with Henry James' famous works of horror, most notably A Turn of the Screw. Are you disappointed that The Haunting season 3 is not happening on Netflix?
Mike Flanagan and his producer Trevor Macy are two for two when it comes to Netflix’s “Haunting” anthology series. After delivering one of the streaming giant’s biggest word-of-mouth sensations in 2018 with “The Haunting of Hill House,” the two have struck gold again as the 2020 follow-up “The Haunting of Bly Manor” currently sits atop Netflix’s most-watched chart. A third “Haunting” installment would appear to be a no-brainer for Netflix, but Flanagan confirms to Entertainment Weekly that a Season 3 is not in active development at the moment. The first two seasons of the anthology are based on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House and Henry James’s The Turn of The Screw, respectively. Those two books are pretty much always at the top of gothic horror and/or romance lists, and there are so many more classics in the genre that future seasons in the anthology could adapt. The Haunting of… has not officially been renewed by Netflix yet, although honestly, that doesn’t seem to matter these days—Netflix has been taking spooky season a bit too literally and ax-murdering its original programming.
On December 23, the anthology's creator squashed rumors of a new installment on Twitter. "At the moment there are no plans for more chapters," Flanagan wrote in response to a fan question. "Never say never, of course, but right now we are focused on a full slate of other @intrepid projects for 2021 and beyond. If things change we will absolutely let everyone know!" Intrepic refers to his production company, Intrepid Pictures. Before Flanagan's tweet, hope for a third season was still alive and well. After all, fans had to wait four months after the premiere of The Haunting of Hill House for season 2 to be confirmed in February 2019. When the series was renewed, Variety reported that Netflix had signed a multi-year deal with show creator Mike Flanagan and executive producer Trevor Macy.
Beginning with The Haunting of Hill House in 2018 and ending with the 2020 installment The Haunting of Bly Manor, fans have been hoping for The Haunting season 3 for several years now. Horror mastermind Mike Flanagan blew fans’ minds in a big way in 2023 with the release of the blood-soaked and emotionally harrowing The Fall of the House of Usher, which quickly became one of my favorite horror series of all time. And OMG, it could have been the best one yet, because he was aiming to put his signature spin on the works of literary icon Richard Matheson. When I adapted Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a Netflix series, there was much talk about how to continue the Haunting anthology. We followed Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on numerous ghost stories by Henry James. Had there been a third season, I wanted that season to be The Haunting of Hell House.
Is a Third Season of The Haunting Anthology Series on the Way?
If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call GAMBLER. While he may not be bringing Richard Matheson's rich storytelling to the screen anytime soon, Mike Flanagan is deep into his latest Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, which co-star Mark Hamill has wrapped filming on. Cross your fingers that we’ll hear good news about The Haunting of… season 3 soon. Flanagan told Vanity Fair, "At its foundation, the Haunting series is very much about haunted spaces and haunted people. The way we make those things dance together is really going to be what's uniform about Hill House and Bly." "There's not a narrative connection, but there are little Easter eggs, for sure, not only in small details but in moments of dialogue and in some of the ideas from Hill House," Flanagan explained. "There are definitely going to be things that will set off that little dopamine rush that those kind of connections create. But it's not a direct connection from a story point of view."

Flanagan's producing partner, Trevor Macy, told Vanity Fair of The Haunting of Bly Manor, "The process is the same, in that it's a literary remix," he shared. "You want to update the story, you want to find whatever fertile ground for elevating the character that you can in the source material, but we obviously took some liberties in updating it with a more modern setting." Ever better, like Haunting, the Midnight series looks to be another anthology. Although Netflix billed it as a “limited series,” Flanagan already has a follow-up, The Midnight Club, which finished filming in September 2021. Although the official Netflix Haunting social media accounts showed some activity in 2021, it turned out it was not to preview a new Haunting installment.

Haunting may not be around the corner—but another Flanagan project is. Production on Flanagan's next Netflix horror series, Midnight Mass, began in August. Midnight Mass will feature two Haunting regulars–Henry Thomas and Kate Siegel, who happens to be Flanagan's wife. Netflix is home to two of our favorite haunted house shows—and more could be on the way.

But it does mean there might be some time before Flanagan’s schedule is freed up for more Haunting. Halloween season is upon us, and thankfully, The Haunting of Hill House has a follow-up sequel series in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, with several members of the original cast playing new spooky roles in this new spooky story. Hill House cast members Annabeth Gish, Robert Longstreet, and Samantha Sloyan also turned up in Midnight Mass, as did Bly Manor actors Rahul Kohli and Alex Essoe. The first installment, The Haunting of Hill House, took its premise from author Shirley Jackson’s book of the same name. It starred Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Henry Thomas among a relatively well-known cast, with a closed-ended story that seemed to be a limited series type of show. The second installment in what seems to be a growing anthology series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, brought back Pedretti, Jackson-Cohen, and Thomas for a brand-new story, this one loosely based on the famous horror story, The Turn of the Screw. Netflix has "no plans" to drop a third installment in the Haunting of... Last year brought ghost story The Haunting of Bly Manor, and 2018 delivered The Haunting of Hill House in Flanagan's ongoing spooky stories.
That’s partly why his latest, The Midnight Club, was never conceived as The Haunting of Brightcliffe Hospice. In fact, the idea of including it as another installment of his acclaimed Haunting anthology was never even on the table. Without a greenlight or plans for a third season, it's impossible to know when a new entry in the series would premiere.
The Cast of Netflix's The Haunting of Bly Manor Are Ready for More Seasons
Take Bly Manor's tagline, "Dead doesn't mean gone." In another horror work, this sentence would be purely foreboding. Within the context of Bly, though, it raises the notion of connecting with loved ones after death. I highly recommend checking out Flanagan’s blog because he’s shared many insightful posts about his work, including his frustration with Netflix for being so against releasing physical media.
When would we get The Haunting of… season 3?
The first season, Hill House, took its inspiration from Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name from the 1950s, which sees an investigator of the supernatural and three other characters move into a haunted house. But that doesn’t mean the door is shut on a future installment. While there are no current plans for a follow-up to 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House and 2020’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, the topic frequently arises for the team at Intrepid Pictures, whose main heads include Flanagan and CEO Trevor Macy. While Mike Flanagan‘s myriad Netflix series do share certain similarities, each project thus far has proven to have its own unique DNA.
It was actually the first title we explored when Hill House was over, but the rights were spoken for and there did not seem to be a path forward. The TV creator told his followers on social media back in December that he had no plans to create a new instalment in the anthology, but speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he explained what would be needed for a third series to happen. This is a mega-popular series with a relatively small cast. Not to be flippant, but the characters in ghost stories are basically self-quarantined in their haunted houses, right?
When asked to decide whether Hill House or Bly Manor is scarier, Jackson-Cohen is torn. "They feel equally haunted. I don't know how much I'd want to live in either," he says. "Hill House is really not a properly operating house. At least in Bly the lights work," she says. There are countless famous books about houses in which human and ghostly inhabitants coincide.
